Hello,
It was great to see you all after a long, summer hiatus.
A lot has happened and continues to happen in terms of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, wildfires, and flooding as a result of climate change. There was a lot to discuss and reflect on, especially since summer in the Pacific Northwest was relatively mild.
To share, I brought a copy of a new anthology by James Crews:
The Wonder of Small Things: Poems of Peace & Renewal
My poem "Amends" is in this collection along with many wonderful poems/poets. Check it out!
For writing exercises, we followed two prompts:
I. Share a small, specific thing (insect, sunset, vegetable, slinky) that brought you wonder over the summer. Write a poem or paragraph in response to that thing.
II. Reflect on a news story related to environmental change and/or catastrophe that has stuck with you over the summer. What details do you remember, how did it make you feel?
Thank you to everyone that came out and shared their writing. We will be meeting regularly and I hope you will join us in-person or by following along online.
Our next in-person meeting is September 27th from 12-1 pm at Village Books. All are welcome.
Environmentalist Anonymous meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday at Village Books from 12-1 pm. This is free and open to the public. I will email a synopsis of our gathering and post on my Substack page, Her Deepest Ecologies, for easier access (no subscription required to see writing group updates).
